Spotted Moray Eel

The Spotted Moray Eel (Gymnothorax moringa) is an aggressive species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, distinctive white-and-brown spotted pattern, large size, and striking presence.

Males typically grow larger and bulkier with broader heads, while females and juveniles are usually more slender in build. They reach about 48 inches (4 feet) in length as adults and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, a deep sandbed for stability, and a secure lid since they are strong escape artists. Stable water parameters are required (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).

Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as fresh or frozen fish, squid, shrimp, silversides, and other marine-based items—they do not accept pellets or herbivorous diets. With proper care and a secure environment, the Spotted Moray Eel makes a standout showpiece predator for large saltwater aquariums.
