Spotted Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus picturatus) is a breathtaking reef-safe species admired for its intricate spotted patterning and vibrant iridescent colors. Its body is covered in swirling green and blue tones accented by vivid orange spots, giving it a jewel-like appearance that captivates aquarists. Reaching about 3–4 inches in size, it thrives in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, though larger mature reef systems are ideal to sustain the copepod populations this fish relies on for food. Best housed in tanks with abundant live rock and sandy substrate, the Spotted Mandarin spends its day slowly foraging for pods and other microfauna. They are peaceful and should be kept with gentle tankmates that will not outcompete them for food. While primarily pod-feeders, some individuals can adapt to enriched brine shrimp, mysis, or even prepared diets, but a healthy pod culture is crucial for long-term success. With proper care, they add a calm, mesmerizing presence to the reef aquarium.
