Spotted Drumfish (Equetus punctatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking black and white spotted pattern, elongated dorsal fin, and graceful body shape. Males typically have a longer, more dramatic dorsal fin with more distinct spots and markings, while females and juveniles have shorter dorsal fins and subtler spotting. They reach about 7 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons.
Provide a sandbed, plenty of live rock for hiding spots, and open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH around 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is necessary since many drumfish species are known to jump.
Their diet should consist of live or frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, the Spotted Drumfish is a unique and elegant addition to a peaceful reef aquarium.
