Spotfin Antennata Lionfish

Spotfin Antennata Lionfish (Pterois antennata) is an aggressive predatory species that is not reef-safe as it will consume any fish, shrimp, or crab small enough to fit in its mouth. This captivating predator displays rich reddish-brown and cream banding across its body with elegantly elongated pectoral fins featuring distinctive dark spots and ornate trailing filaments, plus venomous dorsal spines crowned with characteristic feathery tentacles above the eyes. Distinguished by the prominent spotted pectoral fins, elaborate head tentacles, and more compact build compared to volitan lionfish, this species combines beauty with predatory efficiency in a stunning package. It can reach about 8 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 75 gallons or more, with plenty of caves and rocky overhangs for ambush hunting, moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and extreme caution around the venomous spines which deliver potent stings capable of causing severe pain and requiring immediate medical attention. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—small fish, large shrimp, crabs, mysid shrimp—as well as marine pellets once acclimated, though this species often shows strong hunting instincts and may prefer live prey during initial acclimation period.
