The Spiny Chromis (Acanthochromis polyacanthus juveniles) is a semi-aggressive species that is generally reef-safe with caution. It is admired for its striking coloration, distinctive patterns, and unique parental care behavior.
Males are known for guarding and fanning their fertilized eggs, displaying territorial behavior during breeding, while females and juveniles remain close to the nest for protection. These fish grow up to about 5.5 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Their environment should include live rock for hiding, open swimming space, and a sandbed, along with stable water parameters (salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4) and a secure lid to prevent jumping. Their diet should consist of a variety of foods, including mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, pellets, and algae. With proper care, the Spiny Chromis makes a vibrant and engaging addition to any marine aquarium.
