Sphynx Goby

The Sphynx Goby (Amblygobius sphynx) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking pattern of vertical and horizontal stripes, elongated body, sandy brown coloration with subtle orange highlights, and active sand-sifting behavior. Its unique coloration and constant foraging make it both visually appealing and beneficial for substrate aeration.

Males typically grow slightly larger and display more vibrant coloration along the fins and body stripes, while females and juveniles are smaller with softer tones and less pronounced striping. They reach about 5–6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for sifting, scattered live rock for shelter, and open swimming areas. Stable water parameters are important (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is recommended, as gobies can attempt to jump if startled.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely crushed pellets, and other small meaty foods, with occasional vegetable matter for variety. With proper care, the Sphynx Goby adds dynamic foraging activity and subtle beauty to reef or marine aquariums.
