Spanish Hogfish

The Spanish Hogfish (Bodianus rufus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant yellow-to-purple coloration, elongated body, and striking transition of colors as it matures.

Males typically develop brighter, more intense coloration with stronger purple-violet tones along the back and flanks, while females/juveniles are predominantly yellow with subtle violet shading, giving them a more subdued appearance.

They reach about 10–12 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, a sandy substrate, and plenty of open swimming space. A secure lid is essential, as hogfish are strong swimmers and may jump.

Diet should consist of a varied carnivorous mix, including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood (clam, shrimp, squid), krill, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets. They may also consume small invertebrates, so exercise caution in reef setups. With proper care, this fish makes a vibrant, active, and hardy addition to large marine aquariums.
