The Southern Stingray (Dasyatis americana) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its large, diamond-shaped disc, smooth gray-brown coloration, prominent long tail with venomous spine, and graceful swimming over the substrate. This species is popular in aquariums for its impressive size and striking appearance. Males typically have smaller disc widths, longer claspers, and slightly more active behavior during feeding, while females and juveniles are larger-bodied, rounder, and grow steadily with age.
They reach about 36–48 inches in total length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 500–1,000 gallons, depending on size, to provide adequate bottom space and swimming area. A deep fine sandbed is essential for resting and burrowing, along with open swimming areas and some hiding spots or shaded areas. Stable water parameters are crucial, with salinity at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is required, as stingrays may jump or attempt to climb the tank walls.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped fish, squid, clam meat, and other meaty marine foods, occasionally supplemented with high-quality sinking marine pellets. With proper care, the Southern Stingray makes a striking and captivating centerpiece for advanced marine aquarists, combining size, beauty, and fascinating behavior.
