Southern Crested Weedfish

Southern Crested Weedfish (Cristiceps australis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its leaf-like body shape, mottled camouflage patterns, elongated fins, and unique crest that gives it a “seaweed” appearance.

Males typically display more pronounced crests and slightly larger size, while females/juveniles are smaller with less developed crests and more subdued coloration. They reach about 10–12 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons.

Provide ample live rock and macroalgae for camouflage and hiding spots, along with some open swimming space. A fine sandbed is recommended, and the tank must have a secure lid since these fish are prone to jumping. Keep stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and occasionally algae or prepared herbivore foods. With proper care, this fish makes a unique, cryptic, and fascinating addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
