The Southern Pufferfish (Sphoeroides nephelus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive patterns, rounded body, and unique ability to inflate when threatened. Males typically display brighter coloration and more pronounced markings, while females and juveniles tend to be paler with subtler patterns. They reach about 6–8 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons. A suitable setup includes a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, and open swimming areas. Maintaining stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) is essential, along with a secure lid, as this species can be prone to jumping. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, prepared pellets, and occasional algae. With proper care, the Southern Pufferfish becomes a fascinating and standout addition to a marine aquarium.
