Soapfish Grouper (Rypticus sp.). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its unique defensive mucus secretion (soapy toxin), interesting coloration ranging from browns and yellows to spotted or striped patterns, and its close relation to groupers.

Males typically grow larger and may display stronger territorial behavior, while females/juveniles are smaller, often with more subdued coloration and less pronounced features. They reach about 8–12 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, caves, and overhangs, along with open swimming space. A sandbed is optional but can enhance their environment. Ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and use a secure lid since they may jump if startled.

Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, small pieces of fish or squid, krill, and high-quality carnivore pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a fascinating and unusual addition to marine aquariums, though it should not be kept with very small fish or delicate invertebrates due to its predatory nature.
