Sleeper Mural Goby

Valenciennea muralis is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its subtle coloration, elongated body, and exceptional sand-sifting behavior. This goby is often beige to light brown with faint horizontal markings and a clean white underside, making it a natural yet elegant addition to a reef or FOWLR setup.

Males typically exhibit slightly more vivid patterning and may be more territorial during breeding, while females/juveniles are usually smaller and display more muted colors. They reach about 5 to 6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter, and a secure lid, as this species is known to jump when startled or during territorial disputes. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) to ensure long-term health.

Diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, enriched frozen foods, and high-quality sinking pellets. This goby will also constantly sift sand in search of microfauna, contributing to a clean and aerated substrate.
