Sleek Unicorn Tang (Naso hexacanthus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, focusing primarily on algae grazing and zooplankton feeding. This elegant species displays a streamlined blue-gray to olive body with subtle darker markings and a distinctively sleek profile that gives it its common name, plus the characteristic forward-projecting horn (rostrum) that develops with maturity and six spines on the caudal peduncle. The refined proportions and graceful swimming style make it one of the most sophisticated-looking naso tangs available. It can reach about 24 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 200 gallons or more due to their substantial size and active swimming nature, with plenty of open water column space to accommodate their streamlined swimming style, strong water flow, excellent water quality, and consideration for their generally peaceful temperament that makes them excellent centerpiece fish for large community systems. Its diet should include a mix of marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed—as well as high-quality herbivore pellets, mysis shrimp, and zooplankton, as this species benefits from both plant and animal proteins and requires varied nutrition including regular feeding of meaty foods to supplement their natural plankton consumption and support their substantial size and active metabolism.
