Sidespot Goatfish

Sidespot Goatfish (Parupeneus pleurostigma) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, as it may consume small ornamental shrimp and crabs but poses no threat to corals or larger invertebrates. This elegant goatfish displays a pale cream to pinkish body with a distinctive large dark spot on its side behind the gills, complemented by subtle yellow tinges and the characteristic twin barbels used for constantly foraging through sand and crevices in search of small prey and organic matter. The prominent side spot marking and graceful swimming style make it easily recognizable and an attractive addition that's always actively exploring. It can reach about 10-12 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 125 gallons or more due to their active swimming nature and need for foraging space, with a substantial sand bed for natural hunting behavior, stable water parameters, and adequate open swimming areas, though they're generally peaceful toward most tankmates. Its diet should include a mix of meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, quality marine pellets—supplemented with small live foods like blackworms or feeder shrimp, as this carnivorous species requires multiple daily feedings to support their active metabolism and constant foraging behavior.
