Shoulder-Spot Wrasse (Leptojulis cyanopleura) is a reef-safe fish with a peaceful temperament, prized for its elegant form, bright coloration and standout “shoulder spot” just behind the pectoral fin that immediately catches the eye. Males in their terminal phase show vivid blue-green bodies with subtle orange-lined facial markings and fading stripes, while females and juveniles are more reddish-pink with the signature dark blotch on the shoulder. It grows to about 5-6 inches, and does best in tanks of at least 75 gallons, with plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, some open water for foraging above rubble or sandy patches, fine substrate, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025; temperature ~72-79°F; pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since wrasses are apt to jump. Its diet should include zooplankton, small crustaceans, mysis, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets, with frequent feedings to maintain its vibrant color.
