The Sharptooth Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus sp.) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, bold vertical striping, and distinctive fang-like teeth. Males typically develop a larger jaw during breeding and may exhibit mouthbrooding behavior, while females/juveniles have a slightly smaller mouth and more slender build. They reach about 4 to 5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40 gallons.
Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or frozen foods. With proper care, this fish makes a striking and unique addition to a carefully planned reef or fish-only system.
