Scribbled Pufferfish

The Scribbled Pufferfish (Arothron mappa) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bold scribbled patterns, striking coloration, large size, and unique personality. Males typically display slightly larger body size with more pronounced patterns, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller with less distinct markings. They reach about 12–14 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons to accommodate their size and activity level.

Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots, along with open swimming space to support their natural behavior. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity~1.020–1.025, temp 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as puffers are known for their curiosity and occasional jumping.

Their diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, clams, squid, and chopped shellfish, along with hard-shelled items like snails or crab legs to naturally wear down their continuously growing teeth. Occasional high-quality pellets and algae-based foods can be included for balance.

With proper care, the Scribbled Pufferfish becomes a centerpiece species, known for its intelligence and interactive nature, making it a standout addition to large marine aquariums.
