Scribbled Leatherjacket Filefish

The Scribbled Leatherjacket Filefish (Aluterus scriptus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking scribbled pattern, elongated body, large size, and unique leathery texture.

Males typically display slightly more pronounced coloration and a larger dorsal spine, while females and juveniles are smaller and less vividly marked. They reach about 36 inches (3 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 500 gallons.

Provide a habitat with a sandbed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and use a secure lid since these fish are known to jump.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, marine pellets, algae, and occasional meaty treats, and with proper care, this fish makes a striking and standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
