Scopas Tang

Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, focusing primarily on algae grazing. This hardy species displays a brown to tan body with intricate darker spotted and mottled patterns throughout, plus enlarged dorsal and anal fins that create a modest sailfin silhouette when extended. The earthy coloration with detailed patterning makes it one of the most understated but reliable tangs available, perfect for aquarists seeking a proven performer with subtle beauty. It can reach about 16 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 150 gallons or more due to their substantial adult size and active swimming nature, with plenty of live rock for grazing, strong water flow, excellent water quality, and appreciation for their exceptional hardiness and algae-eating capabilities that make them valuable members of the cleanup crew. Its diet should include a mix of marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, algae pellets—as well as high-quality herbivore foods and occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter and is known for being one of the most reliable feeders and algae consumers in the tang family.
