Scooter Dragonet (Synchiropus ocellatus), also known as the Ocellated Dragonet or Scooter Blenny, is a fascinating bottom-dwelling fish loved for its quirky movements and subtle yet beautiful markings. Its mottled brown, tan, and reddish body is decorated with delicate patterns and an eye-catching ocellus (“eye spot”) on the dorsal fin, while males may develop an impressive sail-like fin they raise in display. Growing up to about 3 inches, this species thrives in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, though larger, mature reef systems are recommended to sustain the copepod populations it relies on for food. They prefer sandy substrates and plenty of live rock where they can forage naturally throughout the day. Peaceful and entirely reef-safe, Scooter Dragonets make excellent additions to coral tanks, provided they are not outcompeted for food by faster, more aggressive feeders. Their diet should primarily consist of copepods and amphipods, though some individuals can be trained to accept enriched brine shrimp, mysis, or finely chopped frozen foods with patience.
