Scarlet Cardinalfish

Scarlet Cardinalfish (Vincentia badia) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its deep red to scarlet coloration, compact size, and striking presence under aquarium lighting. Males typically display slightly more intense coloration and may exhibit territorial behavior during breeding, while females and juveniles are more subdued in color and slightly smaller in size. They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide live rock with plenty of hiding spots, as this species is nocturnal and prefers shaded areas during the day. Include open swimming space and ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is important, as cardinalfish can be prone to jumping, especially when startled.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets. With proper care and a calm environment, the Scarlet Cardinalfish makes a standout addition to nano and reef aquariums, offering both beauty and peaceful behavior.
