Sawcheek Cardinalfish (Apogon quadrisquamatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its translucent body with subtle striping, distinct silver sheen, and the unique “saw-like” serration along the preopercle (cheek area). Males typically develop a slightly larger body and may exhibit more defined markings during breeding, while females and juveniles are generally smaller and paler in color. They reach about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, along with some open swimming areas. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a tight-fitting lid, as cardinalfish are known jumpers. Diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood, along with high-quality pellets. With proper care, this subtle yet fascinating fish makes a unique and peaceful addition to reef and community aquariums.
