Sandhopper Blenny

The Sandhopper Blenny (Parapercis snyderi) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bright orange-red coloration, checkerboard-like patterns, elongated body, and distinctive spotted dorsal fin.

Males typically display more intense coloration and may be slightly larger and more territorial, while females/juveniles are smaller, less brightly marked, and more subdued in behavior.

They reach about 6–7 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate for burrowing, live rock for hiding and hunting, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, since they are known to be jumpers.

Diet should consist of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods.

With proper care, this fish makes a unique and active addition to a marine aquarium, though care should be taken when mixing with very small ornamental fish or crustaceans.
