The Sand Tilefish (Malacanthus latovittatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, pale sandy coloration with subtle horizontal stripes, large expressive eyes, and fascinating burrowing behavior. Its graceful movements and habit of constructing burrows in the sand make it a captivating addition to aquariums with ample substrate.
Males typically grow larger and exhibit slightly more vibrant body coloration and extended fin rays, while females and juveniles are smaller, paler, and less territorial. They reach about 12–15 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons, preferably with a deep sandbed to accommodate burrowing behavior.
Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, scattered live rock for hiding, and open swimming space above the substrate. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is recommended as tilefish can jump if startled.
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, copepods, and high-quality sinking pellets. With proper care, the Sand Tilefish adds dynamic burrowing activity and visual interest to larger reef or marine aquariums.
