Sailfin Tang

Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, focusing primarily on algae grazing. This magnificent species displays a pale yellow body adorned with intricate dark spotted and striped patterns, plus dramatically enlarged dorsal and anal fins that create a spectacular sailfin silhouette when fully extended in territorial or courtship displays. The elaborate fin extensions and detailed body patterning make it one of the most impressive and recognizable tangs in the aquarium trade. It can reach about 15 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 150 gallons or more due to their substantial size and need for open water to accommodate their impressive fin displays, with plenty of live rock for grazing, strong water flow, excellent water quality, and consideration for their territorial behavior toward other tangs, especially other sailfin species. Its diet should include a mix of marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, algae pellets—as well as high-quality herbivore foods and occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter and benefits from varied nutrition to maintain their intricate body patterns and support their large size and active metabolism.
