Sailfin Algae Blenny

Sailfin Algae Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its algae-eating habits, mottled coloration, comical expressions, and distinctive sail-like dorsal fin.

Males typically grow slightly larger, with more extended dorsal and anal fins, and may display territorial behavior, while females/juveniles are smaller, with shorter fins and more subdued markings.

They reach about 5–6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide ample live rock with natural algae growth, caves/hiding spots, and perching areas, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist primarily of microalgae (their natural food source), supplemented with spirulina, nori, and algae-based pellets or wafers; they may also accept mysis, brine shrimp, or prepared foods once acclimated. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium as both an effective algae grazer and a fascinating personality fish.
