Saddleback Clownfish

The Saddleback Clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive black-and-white (sometimes brownish) coloration, unique “saddle” marking across the back, and symbiotic relationship with anemones.

Males typically remain smaller, often taking on the role of subdominant partners within the social hierarchy, while females/juveniles grow larger and more dominant, with the largest individual in a group becoming the female.

They reach about 4.5–5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with a sandy substrate and an anemone host if desired. Stable water parameters are important: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4, and a secure lid since they may jump.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a striking and active addition to a saltwater aquarium, especially when paired with a host anemone.
