Rubyspot Cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus rubrimacula) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its subtle yet striking ruby-red spot near the tail, sleek silver body, and moderate size. Males typically have more pronounced coloration around the ruby spot and slightly larger bodies, while females and juveniles tend to be smaller and display a less intense red spot. They reach about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide live rock with ample hiding spots, some open swimming space, and a sandy substrate. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and use a secure lid since cardinalfish are known jumpers. Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a standout, peaceful addition to the aquarium.
