Royal Pencil Wrasse (Pseudojuloides severnsi) is a sleek, graceful pencil wrasse prized by advanced hobbyists for its flowing motion and delicate color phases. Females typically present a soft pink hue, while males mature into a bright yellow with a distinctive black spot near the head, paired with two irregular blue horizontal stripes and colorful tail lobes. It can grow up to about 3 inches. Best kept in tanks of 75 gallons or larger, with deep fine sand for burying/resting, abundant live rock with caves and overhangs for hiding, stable reef water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025; temperature ~72–78°F; pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid because wrasses are jumpers. Diet should be carnivorous and frequent: live or frozen mysis, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, and quality marine frozen foods. This species is sensitive and may be slow to accept prepared foods initially, so patience, frequent feedings, and a mature tank are key for success.
