Rough Triggerfish

Rough Triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking spotted pattern, deep laterally compressed body, and unique rough texture. Males typically grow larger and may display more vibrant coloration and territorial behavior, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and less aggressive. They reach about 10-12 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons.

Provide ample open swimming space, live rock for grazing and hiding, and a secure lid, since many triggerfish are known jumpers. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).

Diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, marine pellets, and occasionally algae or seaweed for variety. With proper care, this fish makes a bold and fascinating addition to the aquarium, though caution should be taken with smaller inverts and delicate corals due to its curious and occasionally nippy nature.
