Ribbon Basslet (Liopropoma lemniscatum) is a semi‑aggressive species that is reef‑safe with caution, admired for its bright red‑to‑pink body coloration contrasted by a striking yellow stripe running from the snout over the operculum toward the tail, and its elongated, ribbon‑like fins. It has a very secretive, crevice‑dwelling nature.
Males typically show more intense coloration and possibly larger or more distinct fin extensions, while females/juveniles tend to be paler and more reclusive, spending more time fully hidden in rockwork.
They reach about 6.9 inches in adult size (≈ 17.5 cm) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons to allow for space, hiding spots, and stable water conditions.
Provide live rock with deep caves, overhangs, and many crevices for hiding, along with moderate swimming space. Use a secure lid since they may jump or dart suddenly. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~73‑82 °F, pH ~8.1‑8.4.
Diet should consist of carnivorous foods — small fishes, fish larvae, invertebrates, mysis/brine shrimp if possible or other protein‑rich marine fare. Multiple small feedings are better than one large one.
With proper care, the Ribbon Basslet can make an eye‑catching, exotic addition to a deep‑reef or mature reef tank, especially for hobbyists who appreciate rare, dramatic coloration and subtle behavior.
