Rhinoceros Leatherjacket Filefish

The Rhinoceros Leatherjacket Filefish (Pseudalutarius nasicornis) is a peaceful species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking white body marked with two horizontal brown stripes and a unique horn-like spine extending from its snout.

Males typically have a more pronounced dorsal spine, while females and juveniles have a shorter, less prominent one. They reach about 7.5 inches (19 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons.

Their tank should include a sandy substrate, live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, with stable water parameters of salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH 8.1–8.4, along with a secure lid as they are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of small invertebrates such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets to ensure proper nutrition. With proper care, this unique and peaceful fish makes a standout addition to a fish-only or carefully managed aquarium.
