Reticulated Pufferfish

The Reticulated Pufferfish (Arothron reticularis) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking net-like reticulated patterns, bold coloration, large size, and unique personality. Males typically display similar markings but may appear slightly larger and more dominant in behavior, while females and juveniles share the same intricate patterns but remain smaller and less territorial.

They reach about 12–18 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock for hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid since puffers can be strong and curious, sometimes attempting to escape.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, krill, and hard-shelled items to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. Occasional frozen foods like mysis or silversides may also be offered. With proper care, the Reticulated Pufferfish makes a bold, charismatic centerpiece in a large marine aquarium.
