Remora

My species/animal is a fish — Remora (Echeneis naucrates) — a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its unique suction disc on top of its head used to attach to larger marine animals, streamlined body, dark coloration with lighter spots, and medium size.

Males typically are similar in appearance to females but may be slightly larger and more robust during breeding seasons, while females/juveniles are smaller with more translucent fins and less pronounced body markings. They reach about 24 to 36 inches (2 to 3 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons.

Provide open swimming space with some live rock for shelter, moderate hiding spots, and a sandbed. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since Remoras are strong swimmers and can jump.

Diet should consist of a carnivorous diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small fish, copepods, and high-quality pellets formulated for carnivores. With proper care, this fascinating fish makes a standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
