Regal Angelfish

The Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking vertical yellow and blue stripes, vibrant coloration, and regal appearance.

Males typically display slightly brighter colors and may be more territorial, while females and juveniles are smaller with more subdued coloration until maturity. This species reaches about 10 inches in length and should be housed in an aquarium of at least 120 gallons with ample live rock, caves, and hiding spots alongside open swimming space to replicate their natural reef environment.

They require stable water parameters with salinity between 1.020 and 1.025, temperatures of 72–79°F, and a pH of 8.1–8.4, along with a secure lid since angelfish are known to jump.

Their diet should include a varied mix of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, angelfish pellets, sponge-based frozen foods, and marine algae, as sponges are a natural dietary staple in the wild. With proper care and attention, the Regal Angelfish becomes a stunning centerpiece and a prized addition to the marine aquarium, though best suited for experienced aquarists due to its specific feeding and environmental needs.
