Reef Anemone

The Reef Anemone (Condylactis gigantea) is a semi-aggressive invertebrate species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant coloration ranging from red to pink and purple, large flowing tentacles, and the unique swaying motion that adds movement to any aquarium. Males typically are slightly smaller with shorter tentacles and less prominent oral disks, while females and juveniles have larger, more robust tentacles and paler colors in their early stages.

They reach about 12–16 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons. Ideal tank setup includes a sandbed for anchoring, plenty of live rock for attachment and hiding, and open swimming space to allow natural movement. Maintaining stable water parameters—salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4—is essential, and a secure lid is recommended as these anemones are prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, and occasionally specialized pellets. With proper care, the Reef Anemone becomes a striking and dynamic centerpiece, adding both color and fascinating behavior to a marine aquarium.
