Redtail Filefish

The Redtail Filefish (Pervagor melanocephalus) is a mostly peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, with a dark olive-grey body and a vibrant orange-red tail, a distinctive horn-like dorsal spine, and a unique flattened body shape.

Males typically display more intense coloration, especially in the tail, while females and juveniles have a more subdued palette. They reach about 6 inches (16 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (113 liters). A well-structured tank should provide ample live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4) and a secure lid to prevent jumping. 

Their diet is omnivorous and should include meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, clams, squid, and krill, supplemented with algae-based foods like nori and spirulina. With proper care, the Redtail Filefish becomes a standout addition to the aquarium, offering both visual appeal and interesting behavior.

Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
