Redfin Hogfish, Juvenile

The Redfin Hogfish, Juvenile (Bodianus dictynna) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant red fins, striking juvenile coloration, and active swimming behavior. Males typically develop more vibrant coloration and display stronger territorial tendencies as they mature, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller, with slightly duller coloration and less dominance in behavior.

They reach about 8–10 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding and foraging, open swimming space, and secure rockwork, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A tight-fitting lid is necessary, as these fish can be jumpers.

Their diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets, with occasional copepods and prepared frozen foods to ensure a balanced diet. With proper care, this species makes a colorful, hardy, and active centerpiece fish for a large saltwater aquarium.
