Redfin Hogfish

The Redfin Hogfish (Bodianus dictynna) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant red fins, striking body coloration, and active swimming behavior.

Males typically display deeper, more intense red coloration with bolder markings, while females and juveniles show lighter patterns with less vibrant hues, gradually intensifying as they mature.

They reach about 8–10 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding, caves for security, a sandy substrate, and plenty of open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid as hogfish are known to jump.

Their diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets, with occasional supplementation of algae-based foods to balance nutrition. With proper care, the Redfin Hogfish makes a striking and hardy addition to the marine aquarium, standing out for its color, activity, and personality.
