Red Tree Sponge

Red Tree Sponge (Axinella sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bright red to orange coloration, branching tree-like structure, and unique filter-feeding lifestyle. Males and females are not sexually dimorphic, while juveniles appear as smaller, thinner branches that grow and thicken over time. They reach about 12–18 inches in height under optimal conditions and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons. Provide ample live rock for attachment, shaded areas with gentle flow, and stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4).

Unlike fish, sponges do not require a secure lid, but they do need stable, pristine water conditions with moderate flow to prevent detritus buildup. Diet should consist of dissolved organic matter, phytoplankton, and specialized microfoods such as marine snow or sponge-specific liquid foods, as they are non-photosynthetic filter feeders. With proper care, this sponge makes a striking and unusual addition to reef aquariums, though it requires more attention than many other invertebrates.
