Red Tail Cardinalfish

Red Tail Cardinalfish (Apogon sp. Philippines) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vivid red tail fin contrasted with a translucent to silvery body, moderate size, and the characteristic large eyes of cardinalfish. Males typically display brighter and more intense red coloration on their tails and fins, especially during breeding or territorial displays, while females and juveniles have a paler red tail and more subdued overall coloration.

They reach about 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a fine sandbed, abundant live rock with crevices and caves for hiding, and sufficient open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH of 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is important since cardinalfish are known to be jumpers.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets or frozen foods. With proper care, this fish makes a standout and peaceful addition to reef and marine aquariums.
