Red Striped Cardinalfish

Red Striped Cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus margaritophorus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bold red and white horizontal stripes, compact size, and striking appearance with large eyes typical of cardinalfish. Males typically display slightly more vibrant coloration during breeding periods, while females and juveniles tend to be paler with less intense striping.

They reach about 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock with caves or crevices for hiding, and ample open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH of 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is important since many cardinalfish species are known to jump.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality pellets or frozen foods. With proper care, this fish makes a standout and peaceful addition to both reef and marine aquariums.
