The Red Spot Cardinalfish (Apogon parvulus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its small size, translucent pink to reddish body, and distinctive bright red spot near the caudal peduncle (tail base). This tiny, schooling fish adds vibrant color and movement to nano and reef tanks.
Males typically become more colorful during breeding and may develop slightly more intense red markings, while females and juveniles retain a more uniform, subdued hue.
They reach about 1 to 1.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10 gallons (preferably in small groups). For a group of 4–6, a 20-gallon or larger tank is recommended.
Provide ample live rock with crevices and overhangs for hiding, a sandy substrate, and open swimming space, as they are active and often hover in mid-water. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH from 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is important, as they may jump when startled.
Diet should consist of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality micro pellets or flakes. Due to their small mouths, feed appropriately sized food. With proper care and a peaceful tank environment, the Red Spot Cardinalfish makes a delightful and colorful addition to nano and reef aquariums.
