Red Feather Duster

The Red Feather Duster (Spirobranchus sp. on Porites sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bright red, fan-like feeding crown, intricate feathery tentacles, and unique attachment to Porites coral, giving it a natural and striking appearance in aquariums. This species is not sexually dimorphic in an obvious way, so males and females are generally similar in appearance, while juveniles display the same vibrant red crown in smaller proportions. They reach about 2–3 inches in length (tube plus crown) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 15–20 gallons.

Provide stable live rock or coral surfaces for attachment, moderate water flow, and areas protected from strong currents. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). Being sessile, a secure lid is not necessary, but placement in low- to moderate-flow areas helps protect their delicate tentacles.

Diet should consist of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton, rotifers, and finely powdered or liquid marine foods. With proper care, this species makes a vivid and ornamental addition to reef aquariums, enhancing both visual appeal and natural filtration.
