The Invertebrate Red & Black Sea Star (Fromia sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking red and black coloration, star-shaped symmetry, and unique crawling behavior.
Males typically closely resemble females in size and coloration, making them difficult to distinguish visually, while females/juveniles may appear slightly smaller and lighter in color until fully mature.
They reach about 4–6 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock, mature sandbed, and stable surfaces for grazing, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).
Diet should consist of natural biofilm, detritus, microalgae, and supplemental feeding of small pieces of shrimp or marine meaty foods if needed, and with proper care this sea star makes a standout addition to reef and community aquariums.
