Red Ball Sponge (Cliona lampa), a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant red coloration, spherical growth pattern, and unique texture. Males typically are less conspicuous and similar in appearance to females, while females/juveniles may appear slightly smaller and paler in color. They reach about 4–6 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide a combination of sandbed and live rock for attachment, crevices for hiding, and moderate open space for water flow, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since some invertebrates are prone to dislodging or movement.
Diet should consist of planktonic foods like mysis, brine shrimp, and microalgae, and with proper care, this sponge makes a striking and dynamic addition to a reef aquarium.
