Razor Tang

Razor Tang (Prionurus laticlavius) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, focusing primarily on algae grazing. This distinctive species displays a pale yellow to cream-colored body with subtle darker markings and multiple sharp spines along the caudal peduncle that give it the "razor" common name, creating a more heavily armed appearance than typical tangs. The light coloration and unique multi-spine arrangement make it easily distinguishable from other tang species and an interesting addition for aquarists seeking something different. It can reach about 20 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 180 gallons or more due to their substantial adult size and active swimming nature, with plenty of live rock for grazing, strong water flow, excellent water quality, and extra caution during handling due to their multiple sharp spines that can inflict more serious wounds than single-spine tangs. Its diet should include a mix of marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, algae pellets—as well as high-quality herbivore foods and occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter and benefits from varied nutrition to support their substantial size and active grazing behavior.
