Rao's Hover Goby

Rao's Hover Goby (Parioglossus raoi) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its translucent body with a prominent yellow lateral stripe, small size, and graceful hovering/darting behavior. Males typically exhibit slightly brighter coloration and may display subtle territorial behavior, while females and juveniles tend to be less vivid and smaller. They reach about 1.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed, ample live rock with plenty of hiding spots and crevices, and open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH from 8.1 to 8.4. A secure lid is essential since this species is prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood. With proper care, Rao's Hover Goby makes a standout and unique addition to marine aquariums, especially for those looking to add peaceful, colorful microfauna.
