Randall’s Assessor Basslet (Assessor randalli) is a semi‑aggressive species that is reef‑safe, admired for its deep blue body tones with red accents on the fins as it matures, subtle iridescence, and the intriguing behavior of swimming upside down or inverted.
Males typically display more intense coloration and may become territorial, defending caves or crevices, while females/juveniles are slightly paler, shy, and more cryptic in behavior.
They grow to about 2 to 3 inches (≈ 5–7.5 cm). A tank of at least 30 gallons (or larger for stability and room) is recommended.
Provide lots of live rock with caves, overhangs, and crevices for hiding, along with moderate open swimming space. Use a secure lid, as they can jump when startled. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–78 °F, pH ~8.1–8.4.
Diet should consist of meaty carnivorous foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, enriched frozen preparations, and other protein‑rich fare. Feed twice per day or more in small portions.
With proper care, Randall’s Assessor Basslet becomes a fascinating and elegant inhabitant of mature reef aquariums, especially appealing for its unusual swimming orientation and striking coloration.
