Rainfords Butterflyfish

Rainford's Butterflyfish (Chaetodon rainfordi) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking yellow body adorned with bold black vertical bands, a distinctive black eye band, and elegant elongated fins. Males typically exhibit brighter coloration and more pronounced banding, while females/juveniles tend to be slightly paler with less intense markings. They reach about 7 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons. Provide a well-structured environment with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots, a moderate amount of open swimming space, and a sandy substrate. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and use a secure lid since this species, like many butterflyfish, can be prone to jumping. Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes, supplemented with some algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a standout and colorful addition to the marine aquarium.
